Kelly Hedrick (M.Ed. ’92, Ed.D. ’08 Ed Psych) is the principal of Kemps Landing/Old Donation School in Virginia Beach. She and her new school were featured in the The Virginian-Pilot on Jan. 17, 2016:
It was a granular decision, sure, but an important one nonetheless. The designers needed to know which material to pick for the circular piece at the base of the chair legs: plastic, steel or industrial felt?
For Principal Kelly Hedrick, this was a familiar dive into minutiae after nearly a year of furniture decisions for the new Kemps Landing/Old Donation School building. So, as she’s often done during the project, Hedrick leaned on a trusted group of consultants: her students.
Hedrick took samples to a third-grade classroom and asked them to make a choice, sharing her preference for felt, which she figured would be the quietest option.
“I asked them to put it through the wringer,” she said. “They came back a few days later and told me, ‘Dr. Hedrick, this felt just isn’t going to work.’ ”
