Peter Alston (M.Ed. ’14 Kines) and Mike Curtis (B.S.Ed. ’98, M.Ed. ’00 Health & PE) opened a new training center in Charlottesville: The Edge Studio. It offers ADAPT Sports Performance Training.

Heather Jones Bumgarner (M.T. ’01 Elem Ed) recently earned a doctorate in education with a focus on instructional leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Her dissertation focuses on understanding the National Board Certification process as professional development. She also concurrently earned postmaster’s certification in educational leadership. Ms. Bumgarner, a National Board Certified Teacher, lives in Richmond with her husband, Aaron; and daughter, Charlotte, 3.

Casey Chalk (M.T. ’07 Soc Studies Ed) and his wife, Claire, welcomed a son, Thomas Peter, on Aug. 24, 2015. Thomas joins big sister Annemarie Frances, 2. The family lives in Bangkok.

This book appeared on the UVA Bookstore best sellers list for fall 2015.

Rebecca Gore (B.S. ’72) Rebecca Gorehas retired after 44 years in secondary education. Becky taught and coached at Madison County High School 20 years. She also taught Astronomy and Oceanography and was a dept. head and lead teacher at Orange County High School for the remaining part of her career. She received a MS degree in Education at Longwood University in 2009 as a K-12 media specialist.

Tracey Grimm (M.Ed. ’11 Couns Ed) has lived and worked outside the United States since 2013. She served as the secondary school counselor at Colegio Internacional de Caracas in Caracas. Venezuela for two years. In 2015, she began a two year contract at Lincoln School in San Jose, Costa Rica, serving as a college counselor. She is a member of the International Association of Overseas Admissions Counselors and serves on the Inclusion, Access and Success Committee.

Jessica A. Hockett (Ph.D. ’10 Ed Psych) co-authored Differentiation in Middle and High School: Strategies to Engage All Learners (2015, ASCD) with Kristina J. Doubet (M.Ed. ’03, Ph.D. ’07 C&I). Their book appeared on the UVA Bookstore best sellers list for fall 2015.

Emily Hodge (M.T. ’06 English Ed) earned a doctorate from the department of education policy studies in the Pennsylvania State University College of Education on May 15, 2015. Her dissertation is titled “Rigor for All? The Enduring Tension Between Standardization and Differentiation in the Era of the Common Core State Standards.” Ms. Hodge is an assistant professor of educational leadership at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey.

 

Alison Sheble Jones (M.T. ’04 Elem Ed) and her husband Christopher welcomed a daughter, Hartley Anne, on Aug. 13, 2015. The family lives in Arlington, Virginia.
