Michael Bentley's Curry Memory

“I’ll never forget reading John Dewey’s books, one after another, with an informal group of grad student peers led by Professor Gail McCutcheon. We met every week over the course of a year to work through the meanings found in our self-assigned chapters. I received no credit but spent as much time with this project as I did with my regular classes, and got more out of it than I did from many of them.”

William C. Bosher Jr. (Ed.D. ’74 Admin & Supv) passed away on November 30, 2014, in his home in Mechanicsville, Va. He was 68. Bosher served as Virginia superintendent of public instruction under Gov. George Allen, superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools, founding director of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Commonwealth Educational Policy Institute and dean of the VCU School of Education. Until his death, he was a distinguished professor of public policy and the executive director of the institute, now part of VCU’s Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs.

Jill Culpepper Branch (M.T. ’06 English Ed) and Matthew Branch (Col ’05 L/M) welcomed another son, Colin Matthew Branch, on May 19, 2012. Colin joins a big brother, Christian James, 3. The family resides in Chesapeake, Va.

Erika Glavan Caruso (M.T. ’05 Elem Ed) and Thomas Caruso (Col ’04 ) welcomed their first child, a daughter, Charlotte Jane, on April 21, 2014. The family resides in Menlo Park, Calif.

Jacqueline Li Cheung (M.T. ’05 Elem Ed) and Thomas Cheung (Arch ’04 ) welcomed their first child, a son, Braylon Kai, on Nov. 1, 2013. The family resides in Fairfax, Va.

Jennifer A. Schumacher Conway (M.Ed. ’02 Ed Pol Studies) and her husband, Brendan, welcomed a daughter, Charlotte Anne, on April 3, 2014. Charlotte joins big sister Caroline, age 2. Ms. Conway currently serves as a chief of staff at the New York City Department of Education. The family resides in Hoboken, N.J.

Emily Davis (Ph.D. ’10 C&I) is currently serving as the Santa Cruz/Silicon Valley New Teacher Project Program Director for the New Teacher Center in California. Her first book, Making Mentoring Work, was published in late August.

Murielle de Wekker (Ph.D. ’14 Higher Ed) received a runner-up award in U.Va.’s first “Tournament of Ideas,” a contest that invited staff, faculty, students and alumni to develop innovative ideas to address the challenges of dual-career hires for faculty and staff. De Wekker’s project was “Improving Faculty Retention: A Networking Program for Spouses and Partners Seeking Employment as Administrators at the University of Virginia” that would match newly hired academic couples with dual-career couples currently employed at the University. Kristi Rayburn Farouki (M.T. ’01 Elem Ed) and Karim Farouki (Engr ’02 ) welcomed a daughter, Maya Siena, on July 4, 2014. Maya joins big sister Serene, 4, and big brother Samy, 6. The Faroukis reside in Leesburg, Va.
